Features

Here's a list of some of Site Notifier's features. Our goal is to keep it simple and easy to use.

Off-site Monitoring
It's important. Off-site monitoring ensures external connectivity. If you use a tool that resides on your local computer or server to monitor a site, it's completely possible for you to get a false sense of security. That's bad. We don't want that.

Easy to Maintain
Some systems require constant handholding. Not us we specifically designed Site Notifier to set it up and forget about it. Really, you have more important things to do.

Email Alerts
Site Notifier doesn't just track the time and put it in some log file somewhere where you can't get to it. It works with you, sending instant alerts when a site that you are monitoring falls off the face of the earth.

Simple Interface
Life's hard enough and we hate complex things. Site Notifier is designed to be extremely easy to use and give you all the information you need at a glance. We're not messing around with a bunch of other stuff - just the facts ma'am!

Multiple Person Notification
OK sometimes you're just the one leading the charge… not doing the work. Multiple person notification gives you the freedom to alert the folks that fix the problem too. This can save you both time and aggravation trying to get people on the phone.

Actual Site Checking
The top-secret electron monkeys inside Site Notifier make sure your site is actually rendering not just pinging the server. And, Site Notifier gives you instant information about when the last time your site was down. That way you can reduce costly downtime by seeing trends and getting the repair team on the task. It's like looking into the future!

Stay Ahead of the Game
We understand that what it all boils down to is fixing problems before your boss (or client/customer) finds them. That's why we did this...It's all about you!

Pricing

You know, sometimes life's just not fair. If your website is down, search engines might remove your site, partners could remove their links to you, and visitors will definitely have a negative opinion about your site and business. Bottom line: you lose sales. Site Notifier gives you peace of mind. What is that worth?

Answers to some Common Questions

Maybe we haven't sold you yet with the great features. Or maybe those features spawned some questions. We answer some of the common questions below, but if we don't answer your question please contact us.

  1. Why is Site Notifier a better website monitoring tool than website monitoring software I run on my own computer?

If you have website monitoring software installed and running on your own computer then you need to leave your computer at all times and remain connected to the Internet. Plus, if your ISP, cable/dsl modem, router, or anything ever fails you can’t monitor your server during that time.

  2. Why is Site Notifier a better website monitoring tool than monitoring software I run on my own webserver?

Many shared hosting providers won’t allow you to run frequent or long running processes on their webservers, so you may not be able to run the website monitoring software on your server. If you have a dedicated server or your webhost allows you to run software, then running the monitoring software on your server does give you the advantage of being able to monitor more items (CPU utilization, free disk space) but, you cannot monitor your website availability if the network connectivity goes down – as the monitoring software does rely on the network. The biggest problem with website monitoring software on your own server is if the server completely crashes from a bad hard drive. If this occurs, then your monitor will not be able to remain running to notify you that the server is down. Or, if the network goes down, it won’t be able to send you any notification until the network is back up. It just doesn’t give you the ability to know about the website downtime when it happens and removes your ability to investigate the trouble before leads or sales are lost.

  3. If I’m monitoring multiple web sites, how do I determine which level gives me the right amount of checks on each site each day?

When you create an account with Site Notifier and select a subscription level, you get a specific number of daily checks. You can then apply those checks to the different sites you are monitoring; a critical site you may want to monitor every five minutes, while another less critical site you may only want to monitor once every hour. At anytime you can always upgrade or downgrade your account to fit your needs.

  4. Can I monitor my database using Site Notifier?

Yes you can. All you have to do to monitor if your database is up, is to have Site Notifier check for text or information that is being pulled from the database. If Site Notifier can find the text, then the database is working and it will let you know the site is up. If it can't find the text, then obviously there is a problem. Something to be careful of though is to make sure your webserver isn’t caching the page that Site Notifier is monitoring. If it is, Site Notifier might return a positive result (a "false positive") when the database could actually be down.

  5. Can I monitor functionality on my site using Site Notifier?

Absolutely, but you probably know your site's functionality much better than we do. It might require a little work on your part. Straight out of the gate, Site Notifier does a great job ensuring that all the elements that your website depends on are working properly (the operating system. network connectivity, webserver, database, content management system, etc). If you need functionality beyond this level of monitoring, you can setup a test page on the site to perform specific tests such as email checks or checking 3rd party systems. Have those tests return a phrase such as "success" if the test succeeds or "failure" if it fails. Then all you need to do is have Site Notifier check the test page looking for "success" and if any other response is given, then Site Notifier will let you know there is a problem. This way you get the benefit of checking the base functionality on the site as well as any specific functionality that is unique to your site.

  6. Can I monitor more than one page on a site?

Site Notifier allows you to monitor as many different pages on the site as often as you want -- as long as the total number of daily site checks is within your subscription level. Checking multiple pages on a website is a great way to test different functionality areas and systems on a site.

For example, let’s say there's a content management system and a message forum on your site. Both of which depend on different code and data to function properly. You could set up one Site Notifier and tell it to monitor the CMS and another one to check the message forums. It’s pretty easy really!
